The vertical extinction coefficient must be less than 0.08 per meter when measured at any depth below the first meter (California and Nevada state standard).
Vertical Extinction Coefficient - The percentage of the light absorbed or scattered in a meter-long vertical column of water.

Approach

VEC is measured at the Lake Tahoe Index Station at least 24 times annually and at least 12 times annually at the mid-lake station. VEC is measured by lowering a submersible photometer down through the water column.
