Overview

Basics

Basics
This project was a cooperative effort to design and implement an educational wayfinding interpretive signage program for the Lake Tahoe Water Trail. To reach and educate the most users, in 2015 six Water Trail Signage Partners – U.S. Forest Service, California State Parks, Nevada State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, Tahoe City Public Utility District, and the City of South Lake Tahoe – designated twenty public launch/landing trailhead sites for signage. The selected sites have developed facilities and parking, concessions, met high priority operational issues/needs, and represented a good distribution of shoreline signs

11/04/2019 11:13 AM Becky Bell The 20 LTWT educational interpretive wayfinding recreation signs have been fabricated and installed according to land owners/managers. With the Signage completed, SBC has been focused on promoting the 20 LTWT "Trailhead" public launch and landing sites in collaboration with the TRPA and the LT Water Trail Oversight Committee, i.e. Lake Tahoe Non-Motorized Boating Working Group members, to educate paddlers about water safety, stewardship and resource conservation, and responsible public lake access.
11/11/2018 9:46 AM Becky Bell Two grants awarded in 2018 from NDSL 2018 Lake License Plate Program and 2018 CTC SB630 funds have paid for the final design and fabrication of eleven sign panels, and production of 40 Paddler 12” x 12” Lake Access/Wayfinding Signs (Access Signs) for each land manager to install at their 20 LTWT Trailhead sites (2 access signs per site). To help paddlers identify the LTWT launch/landing sites from land and the water and avoid natural resources such as Tahoe Yellow Cress and waterfowl, land managers will install the 12” x 12” Access Signs on property entrance signage or kiosk, and a structure visible from the lake such as a pier or boat ramp. To help paddlers even further, the Water Trail website, www.LakeTahoeWaterTrail.org includes an interactive route planning/wayfinding map that shows offshore pictures (from the water) and GPS coordinates of the 20 LTWTT trailhead sites – another assurance that paddlers and boaters can identify and access public beaches.

SIGNAGE INSTALLATION NOTES: Both grants only cover design and production and not installation. Each land manager has agreed to assume all installation, operation, permitting, and maintenance costs for the Water Trail Sign Panels and Stands. Since both grants were awarded 4 months later than required to have signage completed for 2018 paddle season, each land manager has agreed to install their respective signage by May 20, 2019 before Memorial Day Weekend.
11/11/2018 9:35 AM Becky Bell Eight LTWT Signs were completed and installed by 2017. Funds from the City of South Lake Tahoe in 2017 paid for the design of sign panels for El Dorado Beach and Regan Beach - fabrication, stands and installation to follow in 2018. Funds from Conservancy in 2017 paid for design and fabrication of Kings Beach SRA sign panel only. Kings Beach SRA posts for installation will be purchased in 2018 based on funding.
12/16/2016 12:15 PM Jen Greenberg The aforementioned grant concluded in December 2016. Signage development and installation will be ongoing managed by Sierra Business Council.
01/22/2016 9:07 AM Stuart Roll In February of 2015 the Conservancy contracted with Sierra Business Council to develop Water Trail signage, assist with public outreach and education, and create a sustainable organization.
