Overview

Basics

Basics
Conduct hazardous fuel reduction and forest ecosystem health treatments for the south shore area of the Lake Tahoe Basin. These fuel reduction treatments would cover the National Forest areas from Emerald Bay east to Burke Creek and would focus on the Urban Wildland Interface. These treatments would reduce the level of hazardous fuels within the defense and threat zones. This includes the use of mechanical harvesters and chainsaws for thinning to reduce live tree densities and mechanical chipping to reduce the amount of existing dead and down biomass.

01/11/2024 10:53 AM Brian Garrett 29 acres of hand thin was completed by the Washoe CHIPS crew, funded with LTRA funds. Some additional hand work could occur in 2024. 2 of the 3 ongoing mechanical contracts were completed in 2023, completing a total of 124 acres of forest restoration. 17 acres in one of the contracts was not completed and will be added to a future thinning contract. 1 contract remains active and is scheduled to be completed in 2024. This project is mostly complete, the LTBMU may continue to implement small areas of incomplete work within the NEPA area for the next couple of years.
01/12/2023 10:20 AM Brian Garrett Of the remaining 60 acres of handthing treatments, 20 acres were completed in FY22 and the remainder is planned for implmentation in FY23. Progress was also made on exisitng mechanical thinning contracts. At the beginning of the 2022 field season, 3 separate mechanical thinning contracts were active, with a total of 523.5 acres remaining to be completed. In 2022, 237.5 of these acres were treated, leaving the remaining 286 acres to be completed in 2023. This project is anticipated to be completed in 2023.
01/17/2022 5:48 PM Brian Garrett Forest Service crews worked to conduct project layout for the final contract to be awarded under the South Shore project. Approximatley 330 acres of handthinning was prepped and being packaged for contract award in FY23, however a large portion of this final contract area was burned in the Caldor Fire. A post fire evaluation of the units determined that most of the units burned at high severity, only about 60 acres remain unburned. These acres will be treated by Forest Service crews and the CHIPS crew in FY23 and possibly FY24. Other contracts awarded under this project received little to no damage and will be completed during the FY23 field season.
12/28/2020 11:30 AM Brian Garrett Southeast CTL contract awarded for 142 acres of mech treatment with biomass removal.
01/11/2020 10:32 AM Brian Garrett Contact for Lake Valley CTL awarded, 290 acres prep for mech and hand thin for FY20 award continues.
01/07/2018 11:05 PM Brian Garrett Additional acres were prepped for contract in FY17, expected to be awarded in FY18.
12/27/2016 10:58 AM Brian Garrett This project is funded through several rounds of grants through the SNPLMA program, including the Round 16 award, Complete NEPA Ready Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Treatments.
