01/29/2016 1:16 PM | Genevieve Villemaire | This project provided funding for planning, resource surveys, analysis in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and proposal of BMPs and other trail improvements. Trail BMPs included decommissioning, reconstructing and rerouting trails in order to reduce negative impacts to water quality, wildlife, plants, soils, and heritage resources. In addition, the proposal included construction of new trail in order to provide logical trail connections and loop opportunities. Reconstruction and upgrade of existing trails were proposed to bring existing trails to management standards, including upgrading the Pope Baldwin National Recreation Trail to meet American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials standard for a Class 1 bicycle path. Implementation of this decision in the future will provide an interconnected, shared use trail system that meets the full spectrum of recreation needs while minimizing impacts to resources. |
