Overview

Basics

Basics
The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) are working together to restore the Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes in South Lake Tahoe, California by treating a 17-acre invasive weed infestation. The containment/eradication of aquatic invasive weeds in the Taylor and Tallac Creek watershed is the first phase in a larger, comprehensive Taylor and Tallac Restoration project and is critical to successfully restoring this habitat and is expected to wrap up in 2025. A design contract was awarded to obtain 100% designs and permits for phase 2. Phase 2 is expected to begin 2026/2027 (pending funding and environmental conditions).

Notes

Notes
01/31/2025 12:09 PM Emily Justice In the first half of 2024, continued sediment buildup and barrier integrity monitoring work occurred and planning began for full removal of barriers in the fall. Prior to full removal, the contractors conducted a survey upstream of the barriers to ensure no new upstream infestations would re-infest the barrier site. Additionally, below-barrier root checks were done in a dozen sites across Taylor and Tallac Creeks which confirmed no viable roots remained. Finally, efforts to complete control offshore of Taylor Creek mouth was prioritized to reduce nearby fragments that could float into and re-infest the barrier sites.

In August, monitoring showed elevated levels of sediment buildup on barriers near Taylor Creek mouth and approximately 40 barriers were removed early before the sediment levels made removal too difficult and costly.

In October, crews began full removal of the remaining barriers in Taylor and Tallac Creeks and have been able to continue work through December thanks to continued dry weather. At the end of December 2024, all barriers and materials had been removed from Tallac Creek and approximately 25% of barriers remained in Taylor Creek. We anticipate to continue work through spring, as weather allows.

Acres inventoried and treated in 2024 saw a significant increase due to additional hand pulling and offshore work throughout 2024 as the project wraps up. Hand pulling acreage is tallied for each visit to represent effort expended to complete the work.

Next steps for 2025 will be: release an RFP and award a contract for a long-term monitoring effort.

01/07/2024 1:42 PM Sarah Muskopf Updated for USFS. TRPA needs to add expenditures for 2023.
01/06/2021 4:59 PM Sarah Muskopf Beth and Kim - I was hoping to take "Phase 1" out of the title and just call Taylor and Tallac Restoration. I updated the project cost to make the project whole. Sounds like Kim was thinking of splitting the project? Should we discuss?
01/06/2021 4:58 PM Sarah Muskopf Funding in 2020 was used to award contract and prep for implementation Spring 2021. Contract was awarded to Marine Taxonomic Services. This infestation continues to grow and expanded by four acres between 2019 and 2020.
08/21/2020 12:14 PM Kimberly Chevallier Kim Updated this project to reflect the AIS project. Need to input a new project that just captures the historical NEPA planning and move those expenditures there.

11/26/2018 12:54 PM Sarah Muskopf Updated AIS funding based on 2018 inventories (10 acres monitored/ 6 acres infested). Updated accomplishments.
