The project revises the 1980 General Plan for Kings Beach State Recreation Area (KBSRA), expands the KBSRA boundary to include the 1.36-acre Kings Beach Plaza (Plaza), and considers potential land ownership transfer of the Plaza to State Parks. The General Plan revision would provide a comprehensive framework for projects within, and management of, KBSRA over the next 20 years. The project also includes three locational alternatives for rebuilding the Kings Beach pier to a standard that increases its functionality for boating. The preferred pier location is to the east end of KBSRA.

The Kings Beach Pier Reconstruction project will help maintain recreation threshold attainment status by providing high quality access to Lake Tahoe available to the general public. Reconstructing the public pier at KBSRA so that it functions as lake access during the diversity of lake level conditions will enhance the public’s access to the shorezone and Lake Tahoe.
