Overview

Basics

Basics
This project will replace a log bridge spanning Griff Creek that collapsed in 2013. Since its collapse, the public has been traversing through the creek to gain recreational access. This use has degraded the sensitive stream environment. The USDA Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit applied for and was awarded a California State Parks OHMVR Commission grant in August 2020 for $243,618 to replace the bridge. Conservancy staff received authorization from their Board in June 2021 to provide up to $150,000 in Habitat Conservation Fund (HCF) funding to serve as a match to the LTBMU grant. Anticipated construction of the new bridge will begin August 2025.

Threshold Categories

  • Fishery habitat will be protected and enhanced once the bridge is replaced and the public is kept out of Griff Creek.
  • This will replace a creek crossing that is heavily used by mountain bikers, pedestrians, and OHV enthusiasts. Currently, some of the users are traversing through the creek and damaging sensitive areas.
  • The new bridge will protect the existing SEZ in this area by keeping the public out of Griff Creek.
  • The new bridge will protect the existing vegetation by keeping the public out of Griff Creek. The bridge will also enable the Conservancy to perform forest fuel reductions more efficiently by providing ease of access to adjacent ownerships.
  • The new bridge will enhance water quality in this area by keeping the public out of Griff Creek. By keeping the public out of Griff Creek, turbidity issues caused by this disturbance will be reduced or eliminated.
