Overview

Basics

Basics
This project reduced the risk of catastrophic fire and resulting damage to communities by reducing wildland fuels within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The project areas were all located within the Defense Zone of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District WUI and are all immediately adjacent to U.S. Forest Service Lands that have been treated. The project was composed of 138 acres over 6 units. The largest unit was a 100 acre property located between the communities of Round Hill and Zephyr Heights. The other units average 7 acres and was located within communities along Highway 50 from Stateline to near Glenbrook.

Threshold Categories

  • The project will restore forests to a more natural density and change the forest composition to be composed on more shade intolerant pines. The project will also reintroduce fire into the ecosystem.
  • Fuels reduction projects open up the forest canopy and enable light to reach the forest floor. Then pile burning or broadcast burning disturbs the duff layer and allows forbs, grasses and shrubs to again grow on the forest floor. In turn this vegetation creates browse and mast for wildlife and is likely one of the reasons the mule deer herd around Glenbrook and along Kingsbury Grade is currently flourishing. Habitat piles, unburned piles accidentally and left on purpose also create habitat for rodents that then become food for many species of predators.
