Overview

Basics

Basics
The Diamond Peak Planning Area is within the Defense and Threat Zones of the Wildland-Urban Interface of Incline Village, Nevada. Adjacent high density residential developments include Tyrolian Village and Bitterbrush Condominiums. A fire in the area could restrict the limited evacuation routes for the 500 nearby residences. Fuel reduction treatments provide a safer working environment for firefighters, protect public evacuation routes, and introduce tactical opportunities to redirect a fire approaching from the south. There are 130.5 treatable acres within the larger project area. Smaller projects will serve to treat these acres over time and as funding can be secured.

Explanation In 2019 funding opportunities became available through the Nevada Division of Forestry. NLTFPD submitted for funding for two projects which if funded will allow for fuels reduction treatments to be completed throughout the project area. These proposed projects connect previous, on-going and planned projects adjacent to and near by the project area. The proposed projects and those taking place nearby serve to promote forest health and reduce the wildfire threat for Incline Village and Lake Tahoe communities.

Threshold Categories

  • By reducing forest fuels, this project reduces competition among desired tree species and alters stand characteristics to more closely resemble a historic stand with a natural fire return interval. Further, the project favors the retention of shade-intolerant tree species, and provides niche opportunities for their regeneration.
