Overview

Basics

Basics
The creek and wetland complex found along Polaris Creek has been significantly impared due to development of residential and recreational facilities. The degraded wet meadow habitat areas adversely impact the associated fish and wildlife habitat values, and these disturbances have significant impacts on water quality, floodplain processes, and fish passage. In Phase I, an Opportunities and Constraints Feasibility Analysis has been conducted to explore the restoration potential of the Polaris Creek and Wetland complex while also addressing and accommodating recreational uses that currently occur at this site; a ball field, playground, campground, and restroom/parking facilities.

Threshold Categories

  • Fish habitat will be improved and fish barriers will be removed
  • Restoration of this wetland site will improve the experience of those who use the ball fields, which are frequently flooded in the Spring
  • Soil will be conserved when hydrologic function is restored and large amounts of sediment are successfully treated before entering Lake Tahoe.
  • Wetland vegetation will be enhanced and the areal extent will be increased when the area is restored.
  • Water quality will be improved when storm water is appropriately treated as it passes through the restored wetland site.
  • With an increase in wetland vegetation and hydrologic function restored, the site will support species that rely on wet meadows for feeding and reproduction.
