Basics
This project addressed SNPLMA Round 10 Subtheme 3c, understanding basin meteorology and the issue of improving access to meteorological data to support research and decision-making in the basin. The main deliverable for this project is a website called Tahoeclim housed at the Desert Research Institute. Tahoeclim aggregates meteorological and climatological data for the basin that were previously accessed through a variety of different sites or unavailable online. The project was developed in response to identified needs for recognizing past and current meteorological measurement efforts and compiling them into a publicly available database for the Tahoe Basin.

07/11/2017 7:21 PM System Objectives:

A joint collaboration between the Western Regional Climate Center at DRI in Reno and the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) will develop an accessible archive of historical and current meteorological and climatological data for the Tahoe Basin. The Tahoe Climate Information Management System (TahoeClim) will include all past and present observations from the principal weather and climate networks operating in the basin and NASA space-borne thermal infrared imagery. A variety of specialized sites on and near the lake, and in and near the basin, will likewise be incorporated, including a small number to be added or augmented during this project. The data flow and management system will be established to allow the continued assimilation and archiving of real-time data in the future. The data sets will include direct measurements from in situ locations, interpolated and infilled data on fine grids, three-dimensional hourly fields of data from the last five years, and synthesized information in the form of products, many of which can be generated directly by the users and therefore be more responsive to their needs.

07/11/2017 7:19 PM System Findings:

Tahoeclim provides access to:
Station data from a variety of networks in the basin
Real-time and daily updated maps of weather/climate information
Links to a variety of tools for data analysis
Archived high resolution Weather Research and Forecasting model output for the basin
A guide on using data from the Tahoeclim site.

- The website is extremely user friendly, content rich, and linked to the Western Regional Climate Center and the California Climate Data Archive. I visited it today and looked through several pages within. It was quick in loading next pages and links and it has a very pleasing look and feel; the graphics are outstanding.
- On the main page, the locations of data stations in 13 contributing agency networks are colorfully displayed against a map of Lake Tahoe Basin and adjoining areas, facilitating ready access to and comparisons within various agency records and their display as a variety of charts, graphs, and maps.
- An embedded link to "TahoeClim Data and Tools" takes the user to clear explanations and examples of the kinds of imagery and analytical graphs that can be created with a few selections online, rather than requiring specialized training or programming skills.
07/11/2017 7:17 PM System Management Implications:

The management implications are self-evident. This deliverable simply puts quick production of climate data maps and analyses in the grasp of non-technically trained folks. Whether of interest in speaking to drought effects to grazing over the period of a permittee's allotment, or to the anticipated changes in the duration of the construction season in the Basin, agency staff and the public alike can obtain high-quality information without needing to be a GIS or database specialist.
