Overview

Basics

Basics
Phase I will focus on informing reintroduction strategies for lacustrine LCT to restore a native fishery of the world’s largest inland cutthroat and assess LCT habitat use. Based on research from the 2012 ecosystem study LCT will be stocked in the southwest area of Lake Tahoe to assess reintroduction strategies and increase recreational fishing opportunities. The study will examine habitat use, distribution and movement patterns by reintroduced LCT, use of nearshore refugia from nonnative lake trout and begin a lake wide, multiple agency assessment of Lake Tahoe tributaries to determine potential spawning areas and mechanisms for minimizing hybridization with nonnative rainbow trout.

Threshold Categories

  • This project will begin reintroducing lacustrine Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe, one of its historic habitats. Reintroduction strategies will begin investigating actions for reestablishing this legacy species.
  • This reintroduction of LCT will provide a native, nearshore fishery of the world's largest inland cutthroat trout. This species is considered a Lake Tahoe legacy species. LCT attain very large sizes, is long lived, and highly piscivorous with the Lake Tahoe Record of 31 pounds. Increasing recreational opportunities provides economic benefits via increased visitation, license sales, and retail purchasing.

Notes

Notes
12/14/2017 3:01 PM Stephanie Byers This project is listed as a priority under the final "Recovery Implementation Short-Term Action Plan for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout in the Lake Tahoe Basin". This project will statisfy several Goals and Objectives of the plan: 1) Restore other areas of historical habitat where LCT can be reintroduced and become self-sustaining populations by identifying and initiating a minimum of two studies that inform reintroduction strategies for Lahontan cutthroat trout in Lake Tahoe based upon the recently completed baseline ecosystem assessment and 2) Enhance recreational angling opportunities for LCT in the Tahoe Basin. Under the collaborative partnership of the Tahoe Basin Recovery Implementation Team (TBRIT) this plan was developed and submitted to the Lahontan cutthroat trout Management Oversite Group this past spring. At their spring meeting the MOG gave its support for the plan.
