Overview

Basics

Basics
This project proposes to develop a comprehensive environmental planning document to restore ecological and hydrological characteristics of meadows on National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. We have already completed a very similar NEPA document which focused on six meadows. We are currently restoring these meadows. These past experiences of writing the NEPA document and evaluating the feasibility of different restoration techniques are very advantageous for moving forward with a stream-lined, broader-scale document. As a result, we anticipate this planning project would take fewer than two years to complete.

This project would be programmatic in that any meadow within the Lake Tahoe Basin that meets the criteria for restoration could be selected.

Threshold Categories

  • Part of meadow restoration would include improving stream head cuts where they exist. Doing so can improve stream habitat for fish species. In addition, one criteria used to select meadows for treatment is the ability of the project to improve habitat for imperiled species like Lahontan cutthroat trout.
  • Meadows in the Lake Tahoe Basin are often adjacent to trails and roads. Improving meadow condition would support a more aesthetically pleasing experience by the trail/road user.
  • Meadows are natural SEZs. This project would preserve, improve, and expand meadow habitat where treated.
  • Meadow restoration would increase native plant species diversity, decrease invasive species, and preserve uncommon plant communities like fens.
  • Many wildlife species depend on meadows for food and/or shelter. And many species use meadows for breeding and rearing young. Meadow restoration would improve habitat for migratory birds as well as sensitive species like willow flycatchers.

01/10/2023 9:36 AM Theresa Cody Project was delayed due to staff turnover. LTBMU will seek funding to begin planning efforts in 2024.
12/19/2019 12:48 PM Stephanie Coppeto In December 2019, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit won a Best in Basin award for the Restoration of Fire Adapted Ecosystems Project. That project proposed to restore six meadows and is the basis from which we hope to develop the proposed Restoration of Fire Adapted Meadows project. This award demonstrates the experience we have to conduct this type of work.
