Overview

Basics

Basics
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency monitors for the presence of aquatic invasive species. Monthly plankton tows are conducted in Lake Tahoe from May through September. The purpose is to detect Quagga and zebra mussel and Asian clam veligers. After the plankton tow is taken, the sample is sent to a lab to detect the presence of larval stage invasive species.

Threshold Categories

  • The monitoring of aquatic invasive species will enable the detection of quagga and zebra mussels verifying the prevention of introduction of these species. In the Threshold Evaluation there is a management standard to prevent the introduction of new aquatic invasive species into the Region's waters and reduce the abundance and distribution of known aquatic invasive species. Abate harmful ecological, economic, social and public health impacts resulting from aquatic invasive species.

Notes

Notes
01/14/2021 2:19 PM Dennis Zabaglo Veliger monitroing occurs annually during the summer months. Monitoring of artifical substrates (used to detect if veligers settle upon) was done at eight (8) locations, two times during 2020 with no growth observed.

Veliger monitoring condcuted with plankton tows occured three (3) times in 2020 with six (6) sample locations included in each round. There were no detecions of new invasive species in any sample.
