Overview

Basics

Basics
The South Tahoe Fuels Treatment Project area is located on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County, on National Forest System Lands (NFS) within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). Elevations of the project area range from 6,230 feet to 7,800 feet. The project would primarily consist of forest thinning and vegetation treatments in areas that have been previously treated within the past 15-25 years to reduce fuels for forest fires and promote healthy and resilient forest stands. Some areas of the project would be treated for the first time. The project area is approximately 3,737 acres of NFS lands located in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and general forest.

01/12/2024 4:58 PM Brian Garrett The Al Tahoe Contract - 690 acres was delayed due to the need to revisit field work in 2023. Field work was updated, contract prep was completed, and the contract was advertised for award. Contract award is anticipated to occur in 2024 and implementation on the 690 acre project will begin in the 2024 field season. Field prep for the Taylor Creek (287 acre) contract was completed in 2023, contract prep and award is expected for 2024, with implementation beginning in 2024. Preliminary contract layout was completed for the Cathedral contract, 268 acres, in 2023. Field preparation for Cathedral will be conducted in 2024 and contract award is expected for 2025.
01/12/2023 12:39 PM Brian Garrett The LTBMU in partnership with GBI implmeneted 465 acres of mechanical forest thinning and fuels reduction along Pioneer Trail (Montreal WT contract). This project was funded by the LTBMU and Calfire CCI grant awarded to the CTC. The LTBMU also finalized the field layout, marking and cruising on 690 acres that will be advertised as the Al Tahoe contract, which is planned to be awarded and begin implementaiton in 2023.
02/11/2022 7:22 AM Brian Garrett South Tahoe Fuels is being implemented through partnership with Great Basin Institute. GBI awarded contract for 465 acres of mechanical thinning, inlcuding 1069 tons of biomass removal. The project was anticiipated to start in the 2021 field season and be completed in the 2022 field season, but Caldor Fire and other factors prevented the project from starting. GBI and the Forest Service conducted additional project layout for future contracts and conducted resource survey work in the project area.
12/31/2020 8:52 AM Brian Garrett Additional funding provided to complete resource surveys and conduct project layout. Contract for Montreal Whole Tree mechanical treatments ready for award in 2021, Great Basin Institute Stewardship Agreement.
01/13/2020 8:50 AM Brian Garrett Increase amount spent on project to $2,600,000 - funding spent on surveys, project layout and staff time and Stewardship Agreement with the Great Basin Institute for implementation of mechanical thinning units.
03/04/2019 9:05 PM Brian Garrett $70,000 federal fuels funding secured for planning in 2018; $2,095,000 of federal fuels funding secured for implementation/surveys in 2019
