Overview

Basics

Basics
This project is an 85 acre fuel break located on both the north and south side of Bon Pland Creek. This is the first major drainage south of Tunnel Creek. The proposed treatment will augment fuel reduction completed from Sand Harbor north to Tunnel Creek east of Highway 28. Project area is located in the lower reaches, west end, of the drainage.

Threshold Categories

  • Increase diversity in age class of brush community and grass/forb community by cutting crown sprouting brush species and thinning conifers. Reducing the amount of fuel on site.

211 piles burned on 9 acres in December 2022.
01/15/2021 12:17 PM Roland Shaw 1/15/21 Very limited activity in 2020 due to covid restrictions.
01/28/2020 4:51 PM Beth Vollmer The acres of habitat protected (8 acres) is focused on retaining large snag habitat for both roosting and potential nesting for ospreys and bald eagles. There is an active osprey nest immediately adjacent to the project area. It also is foraging habitat for goshawks. The goshawk territory is up the drainage and up upslope. The treatment area is designed to modify fire behavior so that a fire burning either upslope or across the slope advancing from the southwest or west will be a surface fire and hand crews could use a direct attack approach in suppressing it. Some of the large snag habitat is sugar pine and another objective is to create conditions favorable for the establishment of sugar pine seedlings.

The acres of habitat restored or enhanced (1 acre), habitat type – SEZ/Wetland. When completed there will be at least two acres that are treated. Objective is to remove enough conifers to allow increased sunlight and stimulate the regeneration of willows and other riparian vegetation that has nearly disappeared due to the dense conifer canopy. The treated SEZ will be part of a continuous fuel break that straddles Bon Pland drainage. The willow community has largely died out but there are remnant clumps. Bird species dependent on deciduous riparian vegetation will utilize the enhanced habitat.

Much of what is included in the statement above for the SEZ applies here too. The deciduous vegetation does hold and armor the streambank better than the conifers so re-establishing the willows and other riparian vegetation that includes other shrubs such as ribes, dogwood, and elderberry along with the grass and forbs usually found in these SEZs. This does reduce erosion potential in a drainage that flows directly into Lake Tahoe.
01/14/2020 2:56 PM Roland Shaw This project is a continuation of the SNPLMA Round 11 Tunnel Creek project (located in Bon Pland Creek) which was terminated due to timing constraints. The project is now funded with Tahoe Bond Act funding. Fuel reduction is focused on the lower end of the drainage on both sides of the creek east of Highway 28.
