Overview

Basics

Basics
Infrastructure improvements are needed at both the USFWS's Lahontan National Fish Hatchery and CDFW's American River Fish Hatchery. Increasing chilled water supply and adding capacity to accommodate a larger Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) broodstock would help expand production for stocking the Tahoe Basin. These improvements would assist reintroduction of an iconic native trout to the basin, expand recreational angling opportunities, and would support the LCT conservation goal of achieving self-sustaining, interconnected populations within historic habitat.

Threshold Categories

  • Increases the number of Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout available for reintroduction in the Tahoe Basin. Add diversity of angling for public as well as increased economic benefits.
  • Increased numbers of Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout being reintroduced in the basin will provide more recreational fishing, and native species viewing opportunities. These iconic fish are the only trout native to the region and are able to be readily seen and caught from the near shore providing those without access to a boat an opportunity to observe and fish for the largest inland cutthroat trout in their native habitat.
  • Lahontan cutthroat trout are native to the Tahoe basin and increased numbers of them being available for reintroduction will help reestablish this threatened species. In addition they will themselves provide a nearshore food source for native avian and terrestrial predators such as osprey, eagles, otters and bears.
