Overview

Basics

Basics
Approximately 100,049 catchable-sized Pilot Peak LCT were stocked into Lake Tahoe over the summer of 2023 in support of the Phase II LCT assessment for LCT. A subset of stocked LCT (25,000) were tagged with t-bar anchor tags to learn more about growth, survival, and movement in the Lake. Stocking also served to provide the public an opportunity to learn more about this iconic species and provided a more diverse recreational angling opportunity in Lake Tahoe. Outreach and education on this project in 2023 included: Washoe Tribe of California and Nevada Earth Day and SWEP environmental outreach day.

Threshold Categories

  • This project reintroduces Pilot Peak LCT, the native strain, to Lake Tahoe and will restore an important native top predator to the ecosystem. Reintroducing this top predator is a crucial step in restoring the native ecosystem. A naturally functioning ecosystem would have the greatest benefits for water clarity and resistance to AIS introductions. Information from this project on dispersal, distribution, growth, survival and habitat use of LCT will inform and refine future reintroduction strategies.
  • As LCT are the only native trout to the basin, this project will provide a more diverse, recreational angling experience. This iconic species provides unique viewing opportunities especially during their spring spawning runs. They are readily seen and caught from the near shore providing those without boat access an opportunity to observe and fish for the largest inland cutthroat trout in its native habitat.
  • LCT are the only trout native to the basin. Historically these fish provided an important source of food for native avian and terrestrial wildlife such as nesting Bald Eagles.

01/11/2024 3:16 PM Roy Ulibarri 100049 LCT were stocked in Lake Tahoe over the summer of 2023. A subsample of 25,000 were T-Bar Anchor tagged as part of a tracking and reporting effort. A subsample of 10 LCT were surgically implanted with acoustic telemetry tags to track post stocking to begin evaluation of habitat use and to study predation.

12/20/2019 12:33 PM Stephanie Byers The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT) Project Phase II will assess LCT growth and survival, and guide development of conservation strategies in Lake Tahoe. All stocked LCT will be tagged with T-bar anchor tags that have an individual ID, and a phone number, printed on them. Tags allow for analysis of dispersal and habitat use in Lake Tahoe and create a citizen science opportunity as anglers report information on tagged fish they have caught. Substantial numbers of LCT will not use tributaries for 4-5 years allowing time for development and implementation of a tributary management plan.
