Overview

Basics

Basics
In consideration of potential Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT) recovery actions within the Lake Tahoe Basin, there is a need to understand if hatchery raised LCT are capable of persisting in the lake and spawning in its tributaries. This project will gather information on spawning salmonids. The goal of this project is to gain a better understanding of LCT dynamics in Lake Tahoe by utilizing hatchery fish and monitoring life and individual health/history indices (i.e., fork length, weight, K-factor, temporal and spacial spawning patterns, life span, etc.) from fish attempting to spawn in tributaries around the lake. The use of a long term management structure will be evaluated.

Threshold Categories

  • This project is directly related to reestablishing a self-sustaining population of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout in the Lake Tahoe Basin and specifically the lake. The results of this study will be used to better inform management agencies on the most effective techniques for reestablishing the species.
  • Lahontan Cutthroat Trout are a sportfish species that are highly sought after. Reestablishing the species in the basin will benefit recreational anglers and the industry that surrounds it.
  • Lahontan Cutthroat Trout are a native salmonid to Lake Tahoe that have been extirpated. Reestablishing a lost species to the basin offers numerous benefits.
