Overview

Basics

Basics
This pilot project was implemented to allow Clean Up The Lake to further investigate the submerged litter present below the surface of Lake Tahoe via SCUBA divers and a team of other volunteers. The skills, knowledge and procedures acquired through this pilot project will contribute to the success of the upcoming 72-mile Lake Tahoe SCUBA enabled clean-up.

Threshold Categories

  • Visitors from around the world come to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the crystal clear blue waters. Removing litter from the lake bed environment will improve recreational experiences by eliminating garbage from the natural setting.
  • The remediation of submerged litter from nearshore lakebed environments in Lake Tahoe will improve the aesthetic value for visitors and locals alike.
  • Degradation of litter can have impacts on water quality. Microplastics have been found in the Lake by local environmental organizations. It is possible that the breakdown of underwater microplastics is known to negatively impact waterfowl and fish health. Plastic degradation can also release a range of toxic chemicals that may adversely impact the health of aquatic biota. If left in place, the ongoing degradation of litter on Tahoe's lakebed, especially plastic litter, can continue to release microplastics, and organic and inorganic toxins into Lake Tahoe's waters.
  • The presence of litter in the lake environment can have negative impacts on local species. Ingestion of litter and microplastics is known to negatively impact water fowl and fish species. By removing litter from the lakebed environment species health and habitat will directly benefit.
