Overview

Basics

Basics
In 2023 the CUTL dive team covered 4.84 underwater miles at Fallen Leaf Lake as part of a pilot litter collection project. During this remediation, the team found Fallen Leaf Lake to be the dirtiest lake in organizational history, based on litter items collected by mile. Over 10 days, the team collected 8,322.9 lbs of litter including 3,310 litter items. Notably the team removed 644 tires from Fallen Leaf Lake. The team was not able to complete a full circumnavigation of Fallen Leaf Lake due to a lack of funding. Clean Up the Lake is actively looking for funding in order to return to the lake to complete the pilot litter remediation and complete the establishment of a baseline litter dataset

Threshold Categories

  • Removing litter from the lake bed environment will improve recreational experiences by eliminating garbage from the natural setting.
  • The remediation of submerged litter from nearshore lakebed environments in Fallen Leaf Lake will improve the aesthetic value for visitors and locals alike.
  • Degradation of litter can have impacts on water quality. It is possible that the breakdown of underwater microplastics is known to negatively impact waterfowl and fish health. Plastic degradation can also release a range of toxic chemicals that may adversely impact the health of aquatic biota. If left in place, the ongoing degradation of litter on the lakebed, especially plastic litter, can continue to release microplastics, and organic and inorganic toxins into Fallen Leaf Lakes waters.
  • The presence of litter in the lake environment can have negative impacts on local species. Ingestion of litter and microplastics is known to negatively impact water fowl and fish species. By removing litter from the lakebed environment species health and habitat will directly benefit.

03/19/2024 6:09 PM Colin West Project Update:

Our team was able to perform underwater clean ups along the Fallen Leaf Lake subsurface shoreline between the months of August- October. Due to the seasonal closing of the access road we will have to complete the project in early spring of 2023. Fallen Leaf Lake has one of the dirtiest miles we have yet to clean so far in our projects.
