Overview

Basics

Basics
The primary objectives of this project are to reduce hazardous fuels and create defensible space within 150 feet of park infrastructure at Sand Harbor. The brush in the park is largely mature bitterbrush with minor amounts of huckleberry oak, tobacco brush, green leaf manzanita with several species of willow growing in wetter areas. Mature brush will be cut using chainsaws to reduce continuous fuelbeds. Large willow clumps will be cut in selected locations adjacent to picnic sites. Hazard trees will be removed and some thinning of live trees will be done. Material will be chipped and hauled off site. Dwarf mistletoe in Jeffrey pine will be removed, when possible.

Threshold Categories

  • This project will reduce forest fuels by thinning both brush and trees. Plant diversity will increase with more sunlight to forest floor. Age class diversity in both brush and conifers will improve as well as species diversity in the conifers. Material cut will be chipped and removed from site to aid in fuel reduction.

Hand thinning, chipping, and pile building continued in 2022. Increases in bark beetle activity were noted this summer and a sanitation thin was conducted on 10 acres to remove and chip smaller white fir trees actively infested with fir engraver bark beetles. Additional bark beetle mortality is occurring in the large overstory Jeffrey pines and eight large, recently killed Jeffrey pines were removed via a crane truck that posed a hazard to Highway 28.
12/07/2021 3:30 PM Roland Shaw Implementation began in October 2021 in the picnic area at Sand Harbor and continued for two weeks. The picnic area and administrative site will be completed in 2022. Defensible space will be created around the park housing and will connect to clearing work being completed on the NV Energy 4100 line.
