Basics

Basics
Lake Tahoe Community College's Forestry Education & Job Placement Program will increase the skilled workforce urgently needed to accelerate the pace of forest treatments in Tahoe and will subsequently reduce wildfire risk. The program offers stackable certificates leading to an associate degree in forestry with transfer opportunities to 4-year programs. By offering multiple education and career pathways for youth and adults, the program aims to recruit traditional and non-traditional students and place students in jobs during and after program completion.

Notes

Notes
01/23/2024 10:23 AM Adrian Escobedo The LTCC Forestry Education (FOR) program currently employs five part-time academic faculty representing agencies such as the USDA Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, CAL FIRE, and the California Tahoe Conservancy.
To recap, the college is in year two of FOR programming. In 2022-23, six FOR course sections were offered in face-to-face (F2F) and distance education (DE)/hybrid modalities, for a total duplicated headcount of 178 students and 11.97 Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES), with the following outcomes earned:
• Fourteen 13.5-unit Foundational Skills Certificates (aka stackable "low-unit Certificates of Achievement"),
• Eleven 27.25-unit Certificates of Achievement, and
• Two Associate's degree earned.
During the current reporting period, which encompassed the Fall 2023 academic quarter and registrations for the Winter 2024 quarter, seven FOR sections have been offered and scheduled (five F2F and 2 DE/Hybrid), for a total duplicated headcount of 141 students and a current
FTES of 5.09.
In 2023/24, student demographics in FOR show 46.4% Hispanic/Latinx (identical to last year's numbers) and 30.4% female, furthering progress towards grant goals to assist in diversifying the Forestry skilled workforce. 71% of 2023/24 students are under the age of 25.
In Fall 2023, the student cohort included nine California Conservation Corps (CCC) members from the Los Padres facility in San Luis Obispo who are on track to earn the 13.5-unit Foundational Skills Certificate by June 2024 through a combination of direction instruction (F2F and DE) and Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).
Lab classes include onsite, practical experience at Blodgett Research Forest in partnership with University of California Cooperative Extension, with over 20 students enrolled in each section of FOR 110L. A cohort of FOR students were supported by grant funds to attend the Society of American Foresters (SAF) conference in Sacramento. Continued support is offered to CCC corps members to provide access to CPL en route to earning stackable certificates and degrees.
The EnGen online learning plaform to create FOR specific content for English Language Learners was paid for through grant funds as well.
