Overview

Basics

Basics
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California and USFS/LTBMU are jointly implementing the Máyala Wáta Restoration Treatment. A component of this treatment is to mechanically thin encroaching conifers, and contractors will remove the high value logs from the site. However, the small diameter woody biomass targeted for removal is of low economic value. This agreement will help fund transportation and utilization of forest biomass generated from the Máyala Wáta treatment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that may otherwise be emitted from open burning the material onsite. The Tribe will arrange for the transportation of an estimated 7,000 tons of forest biomass to facilities around the basin.

Notes

Notes
01/06/2023 4:20 PM Rhiana Jones Despite ongoing delays, the Máyala Wáta-Meeks Meadow Restoration Project has
continued to make progress this year in preparation of extensive Mechanical thinning for
the summer operating period of 2023. Although no major thinning had taken place for the year of 2022, progress was still made on this project including receiving a
timber cruise by the US Forest Service, hiring a new project manager, completing the RFP for phase 1 of mechanical thinning and fuels reduction, as well as continuing to monitor and study groundwater fluctuations within the meadow. The Washoe Environmental Protection Department has also continued to build capacity and increase involvement and collaboration with other agencies around the Lake Tahoe Basin.
11/22/2021 10:26 AM Rhiana Jones Due to ongoing COVID-19 delays and wildfires in our area. The Thinning and removal of the biomass in Meeks Meadow did not take place in 2020, or 2021. Work is scheduled to resume in 2022.
