Overview

Basics

Basics
Aspen stands in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park are at risk of being lost due to excessive conifer encroachment and other factors including defoliation by invasive White satin moths. This project seeks to restore aspen as the dominant tree in the forest canopy and stimulate regeneration in existing aspen stands. Restoration methods include conifer thinning and prescribed fire.

Hand thinned and built piles on 20 acres of aspen stands at Spooner Lake in June-August 2022. Aspen stand was in decline, with extensive overstory aspen mortality and extensive conifer encroachment of white fir. Largest white fir to be cut out of the aspen stand was around 65 years ago which is consistent with the cessation of grazing at Spooner. Historical aerial imagery indicates that this aspen grove has been expanding since cattle grazing ended, yet conifer encroachment has been extensive since the the 1960's due to the combination of lack of fire and grazing. Aspen sprouting was noted several months after removing conifers and dead aspen overstory. Burned 135 piles on 7 acres in December 2022.
