Overview

Basics

Basics
The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) will reduce hazardous fuels on 210-620 acres and plan for additional hazardous fuels removal on federal and non-federal lands in the wildland-urban interface of Incline Village and Crystal Bay, NV to mitigate the wildfire risk to the community and improve forest health. The project will be accompanied by two public outreach activities that will showcase fuels reduction treatments and provide education on forest health, fuels treatments, and Fire Adapted Community concepts. These activities will create a better informed and more prepared Fire Adapted Community in Incline Village and Crystal Bay, NV, an area with extreme wildfire risk.

Threshold Categories

  • This fuels reduction treatment will enhance recreation opportunities for Incline Village residents and visitors. Many hiking trails intersect the treatment area. Enhanced forest health and tree vigor improves the human experience in these forests. Hiking, biking, bird watching, and general solace are improved with healthy forest ecosystems. Furthermore, with these areas better protected from catastrophic wildfire they can better serve recreation needs now and into the future.
  • The treatment will improve the health of large dominant trees by reducing unnatural accumulations of understory trees and shrubs that would not be present under a natural fire regime. Understory prescribed fire may open dormant seeds and improve understory plant diversity, bringing about more flowering species, and hence more bugs, more birds, and more wildlife in general.
  • The project will improve the wildlife habitat for large raptors including the northern goshawk, by creating conditions more suitable to their needs. Suitable snags will be retained within the project unit. Understory prescribed fire brings about more woodpeckers, Clark’s Nut Hatch, grosbeaks, and flickers that benefit from newly available food sources. However, the effects of thinning and understory prescribed fire on wildlife can be highly variable, and change within a few years of the treatment.

Notes

Notes
12/22/2023 1:41 PM Jason Furmaniak Project implementation began in 2023. Hand thinning operations were conducted on five privately owned parcels totaling 42.5 acres. An addition 14.5 acres was hand thinned on public lands. During November 2023 a 19.8 Acre understory burn was conducted on IVGID land. A total of 76.8 acres was treated for wildfire fuels reduction in 2023 as part of the SNPLMA Rd. 18 Defense Zone Improvement project.
03/14/2022 9:05 AM April Shackelford The footprint displayed for this project represents the entire area where treatments may take place. As treatments take place the footprint will be updated to reflect the areas that actually received treatment. It is likely that fuels reduction treatments for this project do not begin until the 2023 field season.
