Overview

Basics

Basics
Spooner Meadow is an important ecosystem along Tahoe’s east shore. It provides cover, perennial water, and food resources for over one hundred species of wildlife. Historical water channelization, grazing, logging, and a lack of natural fire events have reduced its capacity to function as a normal, healthy meadow ecosystem. Climate change threatens to eliminate Tahoe’s meadows via reduced snowpacks, declining groundwater, and warmer temperatures. Restoration of Spooner Meadow would maintain its role as a vital wildlife nesting and migration corridor. Restoration will involve Nevada Division of State Parks in order to balance natural resource objectives with recreational opportunities.

Threshold Categories

  • Nevada Division of State Parks will evaluate the existing recreation facilities to determine needed improvements. To accomplish this park staff is completing a resource plan update that identifies sustainable recreation improvement opportunities that are compatible with restoration efforts. These opportunities will be identified by an advisory committee made up of stakeholders, resource professionals, and park staff.
  • Restoration of a healthy meadow ecosystem will allow for increased sediment retention, preventing these sediments from reaching downstream to Lake Tahoe.
  • Spooner Meadow is an important wildlife resource along Tahoe’s east shore. It provides cover, perennial water, and food resources for more than one hundred species. Historical water channelization and a lack of natural fire over the past century have reduced its capacity to function as a normal, healthy meadow ecosystem. Restoration of Spooner Meadow would represent an important step toward maintaining the area’s prominent role as a vital wildlife nesting and migration corridor.
