Overview

Basics

Basics
The project will create and improve a fuels reduction halo around the Alpine Peaks neighborhood located along Ward Canyon on Tahoe's West Shore. The project utilizes funding from the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and will be taking place entirely on land managed by the US Forest Service. The project will reduce hazardous fuels and promote forest health on urban lots and on land that is 200-300' from homes in the neighborhood.

Threshold Categories

  • By reducing younger coniferous vegetation and shrub cover, older and larger trees benefit due to increased availability of water and nutrients. Additionally, more sunlight will reach the forest floor favoring a more diverse collection of understory plants. Lastly, reducing hazardous vegetation creates environmental conditions that are closer to those of a forest with a natural fire return interval. This brings about greater plant and animal diversity and allows more water to reach the stream, leading to increased plant and animal diversity to the stream environment as well.

Notes
12/27/2023 5:07 PM April Shackelford With other projects taking priority, we remain in the design phase for this project. We look forward to entering into a Master Agreement with the Forest Service and a Specific Project Agreement to begin this 50 acre project around the Firewise Community in Ward Canyon.
03/15/2023 10:29 AM April Shackelford The North Tahoe Fire Protection District is excited to be part of the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act (LTRA) and looks forward to partnering with the USFS to reduce fuels on federal land in order to better protect communities from the threat of wildfire. This project will serve as a pilot in the utilization of LTRA funding and we hope it will allow for similar projects in the future. At this time we are working to get funding aligned so we can map the site, determine final acres, create the vegetation management plan, and ensure environmental compliance. Actual work on the ground will likely take place in 2024.
