Overview

Basics

Basics
The Lake Tahoe Community College is interested in reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire, improving hydrologic function, and restoring lost habitat in the Trout Creek Meadow between Hwy 50 and Black Bart Ave. Ecosystem restoration will include the removal of ~20 acres of lodgepole pine that have encroached upon the meadow surface, the installation of fish habitat structures, and the use of traditional ecologic knowledge and cultural burning practices. This project is part a larger effort to reconnect Indigenous Communities with the landscape and increase the diversity of native plants, habitat, & culturally significant species.

Threshold Categories

  • Enhance fish habitat, improve instream flows, and curtail stream erosion
  • Preserve SEZ habitat by removal of upland species
  • Reduce wildfire risk through the reduction of forest fuels, enlarge SEZ habitat, sustain summer groundwater flows that support native meadow species, and enhance the meadow’s resilience to drought and floods.
  • Enhance habitat for SEZ species, Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and Tahoe Mountain Whitefish

Notes

Notes
07/18/2024 1:07 PM Scott Valentine This project is unfunded. LTCC is actively seeking funding partners, but is currently moving forward with some parts of the project with the help of student workers and "in-kind donations".

The college uses the Trout Creek Meadow to fulfill its education mission. LTCC students regularly utilize the college property to conduct their coursework, and the college would like to explore expanding upon these educational activities by partnering with local agencies to provide students with professional skills and experiences.

The college would also like to use this as an opportunity to study multiple restoration alternatives (cultural, ecologic, hydrologic, socio-economic, etc.). Through community partnerships and student-led work, the college hopes to monitor and analyze the effectiveness of strategies that can be used to inform future restoration practices in the Tahoe area.
