Basics

Basics
This defensible space enhancement project with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District thinned trees on 42 acres of land owned by 40 different individuals. Goal was to restore parcel forests to a healthier density. At the conclusion of project, defensible space around homes was expanded. Lean, clean, green zones are have been enhanced among closely spaced cottage and single family homes. This project aligns with the Lake Tahoe - Community Wildfire Protection Plan and reduces wildfire risk in a designated Highest Priority Tier 1 Zone.

12/06/2025 9:35 AM Sydney Morrow Evaluation of Pilot Test:
This pilot was highly successful. Over 80% of eligible homeowners participated in the project. Of the 567 trees marked by TDFPD, 454 were removed (80%). All costs were paid by private property homeowners. Key outcomes: Invite eligible homeowners to participate. Do not coerce. Construct formal RFP's and seek out vendors for competitive bidding. Provide for homeowner input on RFPs and contractor selection. Have a banking system to escrow funding until parcel work is completed. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Large scale projects CAN be completed in the Basin when owners work collectively as a group and competition is restored to vendor bidding. Tree thinning and defensible space work will be expanded to the rest of the community in 2026.
07/02/2025 2:30 PM Sydney Morrow This project is a pilot to determine parameters under which homeowners will agree to work together to improve defensible space on a community-wide level. Over 567 trees were marked for thinning by TDFPD in May, 2025. Goal is to remove a minimum 250 of these marked trees (44%). All costs for thinning will be paid for by parcel owners. If successful, the thinning project will be expanded to the rest of the community in 2026.
