Overview

Basics

Basics
This project will implement monitoring and treatment at previously completed Aquatic Invasive Plant (AIP) treatment locations on National Forest System (NFS) lands to ensure no new infestations occur, projects meet objectives, and biological and physical habitat conditions on NFS lands are conserved/enhanced. Objectives include development of monitoring plans, oversite of scientific divers completing monitoring and rapid response treatments on NFS land, documentation that competed AIP projects on NFS are monitored, and remain weed free, and ensuring biological and physical habitat on NFS lands is conserved/enhanced.

Threshold Categories

  • AIP, once established, degrade habitat needed by cold water native and desirable non-native recreational fish. AIP decrease habitat needed for life history requirements by altering substrate conditions, decreasing dissolved oxygen , increasing water temperatures, and adding nutrients to the water column. AIP also increase optimal habitat for non-desirable warm water fish and amphibians that out compete and prey on native fish. AIP have negative impacts of food web dynamics and impact recovery and conservation efforts.
  • AIP have negative impacts on recreation uses and experience by impacting water quality characteristics and increasing the likelihood of harmful algal bloom occurrences. Lake Tahoe and associated stream and wetland habitat are known for clear, cold conditions. AIP impact both water clarity and temperature. Severe infestations can also impact access. Harmful algal blooms are deadly to animals and humans, and can cause closures to use if detected.
  • AIP add nutrients to stream, lake, and wetlands; increasing water temperatures, reducing dissolved oxygen, and changing substrate conditions. Dense infestation also contribute to harmful algal blooms, which can be deadly to animals and humans.
