Overview

Basics

Basics
This program involves the continued implementation of Aquatic Invasive Species prevention efforts within the Lake Tahoe region. Methods follow existing plans and protocols developed by the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Coordination Committee, and include education/outreach, watercraft inspections and decontaminations which follow guidelines developed by the TRPA, 100th Meridian Initiative, the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Integrated Management Plan, and the states of Nevada and California. This program includes threat assessment, updates to inspection protocols, inspector certification, detection notification procedures, decontamination, quarantine, oversight and administration.

Notes

Notes
01/11/2022 11:54 AM Thomas Boos In 2021, the Watercraft Inspection Program decreased the number of inspection stations from 4 to 3 due to difficulty staffing stations and to decrease the overall cost of the program. It was a successful shift as demand was met.
01/12/2018 3:09 PM Matt Driscoll Approximately 67% of watercraft inspected were clean, drained, and dry. Of these, approximately a third were decontaminated due to the vessel coming from a high-risk waterbody and/or having unverifiable water that could not be drained from the vessel.
08/07/2015 3:43 PM Kimberly Chevallier For 2013: 6,915 boat inspections were conducted and approximately 26,000 were check-ins. The number of launches is an estimation due to technical issues when collecting launch data. This estimation is from the data that was collected and information from marinas on number of launches.
10/30/2014 2:40 PM Jeanne McNamara For 2012: 7,443 watercraft were inspected (3,752 needed decontamination) and 30,569 were check-in for a total of 38,032 inspections.
10/29/2014 3:43 PM Jeanne McNamara Prior to 2009 boat inspections were not required. During 2007 and 2008 inspections were voluntary and in 2009 inspectors were not at all ramps during all open hours.
10/29/2014 3:41 PM Jeanne McNamara For 2010: There were 8,240 AIS inspections and 20,708 check-ins of previously inspected boats.
