Overview

Basics

Basics
The Project area covers Sawmill Road from U.S. Highway 50 to Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Due to funding constraints and seasonal construction constraints, the Project was split into two Phases (2A and 2B). The Sawmill 2B Bike Path and Erosion Control Project area covers from U.S. Highway 50 to the end of Phase 2A near Echo View Drive. The Project connected to the existing multi-use path facility at U.S. Highway 50, installed erosion control best management practices (BMPs) and revegetation.

Notes

Notes
11/09/2015 2:47 PM Donaldo Palaroan The project connected the County's Sawmill 1 Bike Path (completed in 2009) and the Sawmill 2A Bike Path (completed in 2012). Greatly needed for gap closure and safety. Before users traveled along Sawmill Road to get from one bike path to the other. The project now encourages walking and bicycling, especially among students, because now it provides the last needed connection in the Class 1 bike path network between the community of Meyers and the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe. The bicycle and multi-use path network ends at the South Tahoe High School and provides significant connectivity from surrounding neighborhoods to that school. Also, the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School is in the community of Meyers, which can be accessed via the project. The project greatly enhances safety and now allows students, and other users to travel via a Class 1 bike and multi-use path from their homes to schools, shopping, recreation and other community services. The project ties in with the County’s Lake Tahoe Blvd. Enhancement Project (completed in 2014), a Class 1 bike path project, which received Safe Routes to School funding. Implementing this project, the County provided a direct benefit to the students who want to walk or ride their bikes but don’t because of the unsafe situation that previously existed along Sawmill Road. The project improves walking and bicycling routes to and from the South Tahoe High School and the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School. The project also provides connectivity for residents and visitors to transit facilities at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe. Further, the project provides connectivity to employment opportunities both in Meyers and in South Lake Tahoe; where local businesses and services are primarily located. Finally, the project provides connectivity to the many incredible recreational opportunities that exist in the Lake Tahoe Basin including Washoe Meadows State Park, Sawmill Pond, many United States Forest Service public lands and beaches, rock climbing areas, mountain biking trails, and California Tahoe Conservancy river access areas.
