Overview

Basics

Basics
The Control Methods Test was approved by TRPA and Lahontan in January 2022, and implementation of the full test- ultraviolet light, aquatic herbicides and other non-herbicidal methods- began in May of 2022. In addition to the test treatment methods, extensive monitoring is being conducted to follow herbicide degradation, water quality conditions, and efficacy of treatment methods.

Threshold Categories

  • Removal of AIS will contribute to improved fish habitat within Lake Tahoe for native fish and reduce habitat for invasive fish which prey on native fish and disrupt the natural food chain.
  • This project will improve water quality by removing aquatic invasive plants, a known contributor to decreased lake clarity.

Notes

Notes
01/11/2024 3:17 PM Emily Frey Non-herbicide (“Group B”) treatments began in June 2023 including UV light, bottom barriers, diver assisted hand removal, and laminar flow aeration. No aquatic herbicides were used in 2023. Extensive monitoring of biovolume, plant species present, nutrients, benthic macroinvertebrates and general water quality parameters were conducted from May to November.

Preliminary efficacy results for Year 2 (2023) are encouraging. Group B (all non-herbicide) treatment methods will continue in Year 3 as will associated monitoring. The first annual report (Year 1) was submitted on March 15, 2023, and is available online. The second annual report (Year 2) is due to TRPA and Lahontan on March 15, 2024.
07/14/2023 11:47 AM Dennis Zabaglo The CMT project information was updated to include funding by TKPOA in support of the LFA component of the CMT. The Tahoe Keys LFA pilot project is now complete, however, implementation of LFA will continue with performance and expenditures being captured under the CMT project starting with 2022 data.
01/25/2023 10:27 AM Dennis Zabaglo Treatments with aquatic herbicides and UV light began in May 2022. One of the required mitigations was the use of double turbidity curtains to ensure herbicide migration would not reach Lake Tahoe proper. These curtains worked as intended as the extensive monitoring demonstrated no herbicides reached the West Channel leading to the lake. Monitoring included herbicide migration and degradation, nutrients, and general water quality parameters, as well is efficacy of treat methods.

Preliminary efficacy results are encouraging and are informing what Group B (all non-herbicide) methods will be used and where, in 2023. The first annual report is due to TRPA and Lahontan on March 15, 2023.
