Year(s) 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024
Explanation Washoe Tribe awarded contract in 2024, however conditions were too wet to operate and over the snow conditions did not develop. Work could begin winter 2025 if over snow conditions set up, otherwise work with being in summer of 2025.

Threshold Categories

  • This project will reduce forest fuels by removing encroaching conifers and by reintroducing periodic burning as an ongoing meadow management tool. The project will also include the propagation and planting of meadow and riparian plants in key meadow locations.
  • Approximately 1.5 miles of the Meeks Creek channel will be improved with vegetation and other streambank stabilization measures.

Notes

Notes
01/10/2025 1:22 PM Brian Garrett CTC grant for $600,000 was received in 2024. Calfire grant via the CTC will expire at the end of 2024. Current funding is anticipated to be adequate to complete contract work. Washoe Tribe awarded a mechanical thinning contract in 2024, work was scheduled to start in the fall of 2024, but contractor availability was limited. When contractor became available, soil conditions were too wet to operate and over the snow conditions did not set up in 2024. Work may begin over the winter in 2025 if over snow conditions allow, otherwise work will begin this summer once soil conditions are dry and operable.
01/03/2024 10:20 AM Brian Garrett The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California advertised a contract for mechanical removal of conifers from Meeks Meadow and for thinning of adjacent upland forest stands. Contract award is pending, with the goal of beginning implementation over snow during the winter of 2024 (Jan-March) and then continuing implementation later in 2024 when soils dry out. Bid cost came in higher than planned and NFWF grant will expire prior to work begin completed. The USFS is working to receive a grant from the California Tahoe Conservancy to fund the remaining contract funding needs.
01/12/2023 12:18 PM Brian Garrett The Forest Service worked to finalize contract requirements for update of Stewardship Agreement with the Washoe Tribe of California and Nevada. The agreement modification was submitted, but work on it was delayed due to staffing capacity of Regional Agreement staff. Forest Service is working to finalize the modification and to work with the Washoe Tribe on awarding a contract for potential implementation of mechanical treatments in 2023. Implementation will be dependent on soil moisture condition in Meeks Meadow.
01/24/2022 9:28 AM Brian Garrett Progress was made on the Meeks Meadow project, with LTBMU staff completing field work to finalize tree marking, project layout and treatment information in preparation of a contract award by the Washoe Tribe under the Stewardship Agreement with the LTBMU. Contact award is anticipated for summer of 2022 and contract operations could begin as early as August or September 2022, dependent on soil moisture conditionsa and contractor availability.
01/28/2021 12:45 PM Beth Vollmer I did an update with funding information received from Rhiana Jones ( Washoe Tribe). CTC Secured funding $380,454 and CTC Prop 1 Grant expenditures of $228,530 (total amount, 100K had already been reported so I entered $118,530 for 2020).
01/19/2021 8:42 AM Brian Garrett The Meeks Meadow Restoration project was delayed due to impacts and staffing availability related to Covid-19. Very little work was done in 2020, the project is scheduled to resume in 2021.
12/12/2018 10:37 AM Sarah Muskopf USFS -LTBMU staff aided Washoe Tribe in project planning needed for CEQA and in the development of the timber waiver for project implementation.
