Overview

Basics

Basics
The Meeks Bay restoration project involves the planning for the future of the marina, as well as restoration of the Meeks Creek lagoon. The shallow warm waters create a breeding ground for Aquatic Invasive Species. The desired condition is to restore the lagoon to a natural condition while providing a recreation experience which is lighter on the landscape. In addition to current camping and day use recreation opportunities, the desired condition may include facilities and accommodations for motorized and non-motorized boating in Meeks Bay and upgrades to facilities. Phase 1 (planning & design) est. $2 million; Phase 2 (implementation and Hwy 89 bridge replacement) est. $11 million.

Threshold Categories

  • The desired condition is to restore the lagoon to a more natural condition while maintaining a recreation experience which is lighter on the landscape. This recreation experience may include a pedestrian/bike path and bridge joining existing forest service recreations sites currently operated on either side of the lagoon. In addition to current recreation opportunities, the desired condition will include facilities and accommodations for motorized and non-motorized boating in Meeks Bay and upgrades to any facilities in Meeks Resort and Meeks Campground impacted by this project.
  • The Meeks Bay restoration projects involves the planning for decommissioning of the marina and built environment within and around the Meeks Bay lagoon, as well as restoration of the Meeks Creek lagoon and wetlands area.
  • The marina was constructed in 1960. Since this time, the Clean Water Act was enacted, Lake Tahoe was listed as a 303d impaired water body, Federal universal accessibility laws have been enacted and updated and building codes have improved. The marina was not constructed to meet these laws and codes. In addition, the condition of the slope stabilization around the 90,000 square foot marina is poor and much of the sheet pile and rock slope stabilization is incomplete, defective, and in need of replacement.
  • The shallow warm waters create a breeding ground for aquatic invasive species (AIS) that threaten the Lake Tahoe ecosystem.
